you will need:
The Video (the video should be in MOV, AVI, MPG, MPEG, OR MP4 format)
Photoshop (i used CS5 in this tutorial)
if the pictures are too small, open the pictures in a new tab.
Open Photoshop. Then go to File > Import > Video Frames to Layers
a dialog box will open and will let you select the video (the video should be in MOV, AVI, MPG, MPEG, OR MP4 format)
I used Who Says by Selena Gomez
then a window will open:
there are two options: From Beginning To End & Selected Range only. select the second one. And make sure the Make Frame Animation box is checked.
go to the part of the video you want to gif.
I will gif the part “I’m no beauty queen, I’m just beautiful me.”
so when you get to that part, pause the video. hold the shift key and press the right arrow on the bottom right part of the video until the whole part you want to gif is covered.
so as you can see below, while holding the Shift Key and pressing the right arrow, a portion of the video is higlighted.
after you’re satisfied with the part, press OK.
you should enable your animation window by going to WINDOW>ANIMATION
on the animation window, you can see the frames of the video.
crop the gif to your desired size. I will crop the gif to 245px x 150px
OPTIONAL: if you want to sharpen the gif, download this Sharpen Action by scarsyoumade. THIS ACTION WILL AUTOMATICALLY SHARPEN ALL THE LAYERS SO YOU WON’T HAVE TO DO IT ONE BY ONE. YOU SHOULD NOT DELETE ANY FRAMES FIRST BECAUSE THE ACTION WON’T WORK.
as you can see, the gif i made has 59 frames. i want to reduce it to 30 frames. to do this, select the 31st frame in the Animation window
and select the 59th frame while holding the Shift button. this will highlight the frames 31 to 59
drag the frames to the trash bin icon below the animation window to delete the frames
voila! you have 30 frames left.
and to make the gif slower or faster, select all the frames NOT THE LAYERS by using the method we used above. click on the first frame and click on the last frame while holding the Shift button. now you will see that there’s a delay time below each frame. mine’s 0.04 sec. so to change this, click on the delay time (0.04 sec)
a dialog box will appear. select 0.1 seconds to make the gif slower.
all of the frames’ delay time will be changed to 0.1 sec.
finally, to add coloring to your gif, just drag the coloring to the gif. MAKE SURE THAT THE COLORING IS ON TOP OF ALL LAYERS
now you’re ready to save the gif.
click file > save for web & devices.
a dialog box will appear.
make sure GIF is selected. you are free to choose the color amount. i used 128 colors.
and click save. type the file name you want and click SAVE.
voila! you have your gif.
if the file is above 1MB, it will not work on tumblr so decrease the frames if ever.
